An at home newborn session is always a yes for me, I am especially all about it if you have a beautiful garden or backyard to capture these sweet moments. This backyard garden newborn session in Carpinteria, CA is truly so sweet and the light was hitting at the most perfect time.

Along the coast of Carpinteria, CA there is this amazing location perched on a hill overlooking the coast that provides such a gorgeous vibe and overall feeling that was perfect for this Carpinteria newborn session. The beach is always a dream to photograph newborn sessions as well but this backyard was the perfect spot for this family.

Timing of Session:
I photographed this session in the mid/almost late afternoon. It was before sunset so that there was enough light under the trees and since we were not going to the beach, it was the perfect time. The backyard was so calm and peaceful which made for the perfect setting for new parents trying to settle a baby.

Why the Outside Newborn Sessions Work:
Another absolute perk of having your newborn session in the backyard (if possible) is that if your newborn is feeling a little off, tired etc. the fresh air, sun and crisp ocean breeze literally is magical for babies. I always say when in doubt, always take them outside or go on a walk hehe. Always works for my little ones.

My Workflow on the Day of the Session:
We started with details of baby girl, her hands, feet, nose etc. She was a doll and so so precious!
I like to start out with the details of baby then move to mom and baby, dad and baby and end with different variations of family shots of everyone together. This is often when we change baby into a different outfit, usually out of the swaddle at this point. However, I have many families opt to keep baby swaddled the full session and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Less is More:
My newborn sessions, whether they’re inside or outside, are shot in an organic natural way. I don’t overly pose or over swaddle. I want these to feel like you and your loved ones are gathering naturally at home in your comfort zone but elevated a bit. I don’t need crazy props, just you and your babies. Sometimes I find myself loving the most simple, raw and candid images to be my favorite of my clients and of my personal photos.

The Home Holds a Memory:
There is something so special about not only having images of your baby this teeny tiny but also having these memories of you all in the home or backyard, where you started this story together. To me, having it at the home (whether in home or backyard) is extremely personal and memorable. The places you wake up, walk your baby, have your coffee all bring back so many of those beautiful (and sometimes messy and TIRED) moments that you will look back on so fondly, maybe part happy to be over that phase as well hehe.
