Planning family photo outfits is so fun….well actually, some of you may think it’s daunting and as much as I love style, clothes and vibes I get a little overwhelmed with this process of photos too. It can honestly be the hardest part of photos. If you’re a family of four, our main goal is to look coordinated without being overly “matchy,” think of those plain white shirts and matching jeans, let’s avoid that. We can lean into the matching look just maybe slightly different than we did it 25 years ago. This guide, What to Wear for Family Photos (Family of 4 Outfit Ideas + Style Guide) will walk you through exactly what to wear for family photos so your images won’t look outdated in 20 years and they will give off the perfect vibe.

START WITH A COLOR PALETE
The easiest way to create a visually pleasing look is by choosing a simple, cohesive color palette. Aim for 3–5 colors that complement each other as opposed to identical.

Great base tones include:
Cream, white, beige, or tan
Soft gray or light denim
Muted shades like sage green, dusty blue, or warm rust

These tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family’s connection rather than bright or distracting colors. However, I LOVE adding some color to the photos so don’t be too afraid of this just be mindful of colors that reflect poorly off of the skin i.e bright neon yellows and oranges, deep bright reds, etc. I would also recommend avoiding shirts that have a huge logo on them.
Places we LOVE to shop from for family outfits:
Zara (both kids and adults)
H&M (both kids and adults)
Petal and Pup (mom)
Target (everyone)
Free People (mom)
Baltic Born (mom)
Rylee and Cru (mom + kids)
Altar’d State (mom +kids)

CHOOSE ONE OUTFIT TO BEGIN THEN PLAN BASED OFF OF THAT:
A helpful trick is to start with one outfit you love, I always recommend that being mom’s outfit. This always feel like the hardest outfit to find so find a good solid outfit you feel confident in and then plan everyone else’s outfits around that. You can then pull coordinating colors from that piece to create a balanced and intentional look across everyone.

For example, if one outfit includes soft florals with hints of blue and cream, you can dress others in solid versions of those tones- this is my favorite thing to do…mixing patterns and solids together, sometimes if done well, you can mix a couple different patterns together.
MIX TEXTURES AND LAYERS WITH THE OUTFITS:
Adding different textures brings visual interest to your photos without needing bold patterns. Consider mixing:
Linen, cotton, or chiffon
Knit sweaters or cardigans
Denim or soft structured pieces
Layers like a shirt with a sweater over it, or button-ups can elevate the look and give you subtle variety in your photos.

KEEP EVERYONE COMFORTABLE:
Comfort is an absolute necessity, especially for the little ones. If someone feels itchy, restricted, or unlike themselves, it will likely come out in the photos due to how they are reacting, standing or expressing authentically. Choose breathable fabrics, well-fitting pieces, and outfits your kids can move and play in naturally. I’m not sure about you but my oldest daughter is very vocal about what she does and doesn’t like when she is wearing it so I encourage you to try them on prior to see if it will work well.
The way you physically feel will completely transform how you look in your photos or how your family feels during the session.

Family of Four outfit inspo:
Example of what each person in your family of four should wear:
Mom
Flowy midi or maxi dress in a neutral or soft floral
Simple jewelry and cute flats, no shoes for the beach
Light layers like a cardigan
Dad
Button-up shirt, henley, or fitted polo
Pants- light beige, gray, nice light jean
Optional layering with a casual jacket or sweater if it fits the same color pattern
Child 1
Dress, skirt, or romper with soft texture or subtle print
Coordinating cardigan or hair accessory, cute flats
Child 2
Simple shirt, shorts, simple pants and a sweater
Suspenders for a cute touch

DRESS FOR THE LOCATION YOU CHOSE:
You never want to look out of place with your outfits, for example wearing a very dressy jacket at the beach or a floor length dressy gown by the coast, just feels too much.
Here are my recommendations for each type of location:
Beach photos: Light fabrics, soft colors, whimsical prints, barefoot-check out this pretty beach maternity session here! Park or field: Earth tones, relaxed textures, loveee layering for this type of location
Urban setting: Slightly more structured outfits, this is where you could get away with a bit of a dressier vibe
In-home session: Cozy, neutral pieces that reflect your everyday style- think neutral gingham flowy pants and a sweater, matching set outfit, sweater and comfy pants.

The best family photos aren’t about perfectly curated outfits, they’re really are about capturing connection, personality, and real moments. When your clothing feels coordinated and natural, it allows your family’s love to take center stage.

Keep it simple, choose pieces you genuinely feel good in, and focus on enjoying the moment together throughout the session, those genuine interactions will photograph so well and really take your photos to the next level. However, I think a bit of planning for coordinating your outfits is important and something to ask your photographer about and coordinate a bit, that’s why I am here to help and writing this guide, What to Wear for Family Photos (Family of 4 Outfit Ideas + Style Guide). I hope this guide helped you coordinate a bit and got you started! Check out this beach family session here!
