The best advice for your newborn session is something I get asked a lot and it is so important because babies grow SO stinking fast and before you know it, they are walking, talking and off to school! Below I go into details of when to aim to get your newborn photos captured in addition to some other helpful tips to make sure your newborn photo experience is enjoyable + relaxed.
Having a new baby is on another level, am I right?! You are trying to manage finishing up work things, preparing your hospital bag, getting the nursery ready- I mean I could go on and on. Then they arrive and your world is turned upside down, both because you are sleep deprived (the worst!) and because you have this outpouring love for a new little being that you are 100% responsible for. Well, all this to say the last thing on your mind is trying to book those newborn photos, but as that little babe starts to change and grow, your first thing you think about is how you will never have those moments back, EVER. This is why capturing photos of when they are so precious and little is so important.
1st TIP:
Ideally, book your newborn session before the little one arrives, it makes things much easier. We can always adjust the date and time a bit if needed but at least you have it on the books and you won’t forget about it. Understanding that not everyone has the luxury of this, if you can, do it!
2nd TIP:
Book your session within 1-3 weeks of them being earthside. If you want those sleepy newborn photos, this is key. As they get to be about 3.5-4 weeks old (sometimes even a bit sooner), they start to become more alert. Don’t get me wrong though, if you want to capture this side of them more (i.e looking around etc.) then we can totally do that! Either way, they will be beautiful because it’s your child.
3rd TIP:
I always bring a couple swaddle options and try to stick with a white one, light pink for girl or light blue for boy (add a bow for a girl) so that it keeps things simple and clean. If you are wanting to have them in a particular outfit stick with good soft tones like creams, beige, white, sage, lavender, light blue, mauve, light pink etc. It always photographs SO much better and makes for those creamy, dreamy photos.
4th TIP:
What mom and dad wears is important! Now, I know you just had a baby and you’re like I don’t want to be in photos, yuck! Well, from my experience, I think your child will appreciate you being in them when they are older, they will not care what you looked like and they will be so happy they have that heirloom to show their children someday. However, I know how you feel mama’s, I wanna look my best. That is why wearing light neutral/soft colors is so important, they always photograph the best and reflect off the skin perfectly. As far as what type of outfit to wear, dresses always flatter everyone so well! If dresses aren’t your style, casual light jeans and a light sweater are also great! For the dads, nice cream casual pants and a sweater is perfect!
5th TIP:
Lastly, and most importantly in the best advice for your newborn session is to relax and treasure these moments. They vanish so fast it’s sometimes incomprehensible. So take a big deep breath, you are doing a good job. No matter when or how we capture these moments, they are images of your most treasured gem, your baby, so you are guaranteed to love them!
