Welcoming a sweet baby into your home is such a big event! Capturing those special and early days with a professional photographer is a beautiful way to document those fleeting moments. As you are getting ready to schedule your photos, you are probably thinking what to wear for newborn photos? Below I will share some tips and ideas on what to wear as the mama, what to prepare for dad to wear and how you can be ready for newborn outfits also!

Comfort is Important:
When I shoot my newborn sessions I love to grab a mix of shots of just baby solo, baby with any other siblings, family together, mama and baby, dad and baby etc. My number one tip is to make sure that you and your family are prioritizing comfort so that you feel at ease throughout your session. For this reason, I always recommend that mama wears a nice flowy dress- it’s always so much comfier than tight pants, it’s flattering on our postpartum bodies and it’s whimsical and dreamy to match the vibe of your photos.

Aim for Soft Color Tones:
Choosing softer tones for colors is amazing for making sure the edits come out beautifully. I always recommend colors like mauve, beige, cream, light blues, sage etc. It’s also ok to incorporate some subtle patterns and mix those patterns with one another. Say for example, mom wears a mauve floral dress while dad wore a light beige checkered shirt. Keep things cohesive and not perfectly matched.

Avoid busy patterns and bright colors:
Again, I love patterns and color but choose wisely. You want the main focus of your photos to be of your sweet family and baby so keeping things more subtle is key to make sure we do that. The perfect balance of finding some color and texture but not letting it take over the photo is everything.

What does dad wear?
This one is a lot easier, which is why I always say to find what mom is going to wear first to make sure she loves how she looks and feels. Dad needs to compliment mom so a nicer pair of pants (can be a nice pair of jeans) but I would probably avoid blue jeans. Does not need to be anything super fancy, it is your home so you wouldn’t casually wear dress pants while sitting on the couch, aim for a nicer pair of jeans always with a nice sweater or long sleeve shirt.

Lastly, what does baby wear?
For baby, it can be super flexible. I personally bring my own swaddles that can compliment a lot of different color combos. We generally start out with baby swaddled and get those precious solo shots. A lot of times we will just keep baby in the swaddle for the entire session, but sometimes my clients will choose a special outfit to end the session with for baby. Either way, it turns out beautifully!
